Help and scope of this service
HazMat Tool is built to make regulatory information accessible and checks repeatable — clearly, quickly, and with traceable sources.
Information only — no personal consulting
This website provides regulatory information and tools for your own review. It does not provide personal advice, legal opinions, or professional hazardous materials consulting.
Every transport, storage, and handling situation has its own facts. You remain responsible for compliance and for verifying information against the current official regulations. For binding interpretations and operational decisions, contact the competent authorities or qualified specialists.
What HazMat Tool provides
HazMat Tool brings together data from the U.S. Hazardous Materials Regulations (49 CFR) in one place — maintained carefully and updated on a regular schedule.
- Substance search by UN number, proper shipping name, CAS, and special provision codes
- Segregation check based on 49 CFR 177.848 (HMT segregation requirements)
- Segregation table, placards, ERG guides, and manifest support
- Source references and links to the official rule text where applicable
Search from your browser address bar
HazMat Tool publishes an OpenSearch plugin. After you add it, many browsers let you search the substance database directly from the address bar (often after typing a keyword such as ht or choosing “HazMat Tool” from search providers).
- Firefox: open Chemical Search, click the search icon in the address bar, then “Add ‘HazMat Tool - Search Database’” (wording may vary).
- Chrome / Edge: Settings → Search engine → Manage search engines and site search → add from a visit to info.php if the browser offers HazMat Tool, or bookmark OpenSearch at search1.xml.
- Manual check: this site advertises the plugin via
<link rel="search" … href="search1.xml">in the page head.
